If an activated ability is functional, but its source has no controller, then the owner may activate the ability instead.

Example: Vigorous Windup has the text “Instant – Discard this: Create a Vigor token.” This ability is functional while the card is in its owner’s hand. The owner may activate the ability despite not controlling the source.
